His last day at Carleton, after a five\u002Dyear term, will be Aug. 31.

“There is a sadness in departing from Carleton, of that there is no doubt,” Bacon, whose last day at the Ottawa university will be Aug. 31, said in a news release from the university. He will formally commence his duties at UBC on Nov. 1.“It has been an amazing five years and it’s been a privilege to work with so many smart, caring people and to achieve so much together. I offer my sincere and immense gratitude to the entire community for allowing me to be part of the Raven journey,” Bacon said.

Dr. Jerry Tomberlin, who has been serving as Carleton’s provost and vice-president since 2017, will serve as interim president and vice-chancellor starting Sept. 1, 2023, the university added.Article content “Through strategic vision, hard work, character and unfailing integrity, President Bacon has served our university in so many ways,” said Greg Farrell, chair of Carleton’s board of governors. “The progress our university has made under his leadership is getting noticed across Canada and clearly caught the eye of UBC.”

Bacon will become the 17th president and vice-chancellor of UBC. He will take over them from former president Santa Ono, who left in October to serve as president of the University of Michigan. Professor Deborah Buszard has served as interim president since Ono’s departure and will continue in that role until Bacon starts, UBC said Thursday.

Bacon holds a PhD in neuropsychology from the Université de Montréal.
