'Absolutely gobsmacked - they had no idea this was going on' 🤬
A community desperate to stop its beloved GP surgery falling into local hands has stepped up its fight against a private takeover.
According to Dr Robinson, she was pipped by just four points in a scoring system, leaving patients "absolutely gobsmacked – and angry". She told the i: "They had no idea this was going on and had no real chance to give any feedback on the matter... I scored higher on patient care, but lower [than SSP] on things like HR and IT policies that are far more skewed to big over small providers. It’s been like a corner shop going up against Tesco.
The surgery which started off in the late 1960's was founded by the late Dr David Alexander Braide who helped his patients in his own home. Once established as the local GP, Dr Braide design the blueprint for the health centre and the building was brought to life in the early 1970's. "If you go to a practice run by these private firms, they're mostly run by locum doctors. They don't have that connection to the area so you don't have the continuity of care so the person who maybe starts you off on a route of diagnosis and treatment for a serious illness, you will not see that person again because the next time you do it will be a different person- continuity of care is everything in general practice.
"I'm certain that this will change. It will probably take a good few years for it to change but general practice is the jewel in the crown at the NHS. If you do not adequately fund basic community services and good primary care services, then the pressure on the hospitals becomes immense and we can see what's happening in hospitals now and in A&E up and down the country.
