Calgary city hall, led by Mayor Jyoti Gondek and council, are awash with $1 billion in a rainy\u002Dday fund and $4 billion in back\u002Dup bucks
You know, city hall. They always say their cupboard is bare. They always tell you they are getting the short end of the stick. The beggar bowl is out. They are so hard done by.
As of the end of last year the city had an uncommitted reserve balance of $1.7 billion. More money waiting for a place to be spent. You have to dream a lot of brainwaves to keep up with the cash flow.Going back years, there have been editorials and columns and articles and even cartoons about how much money city hall has squirrelled away.At the end of 2015, the city hall rainy-day fund was at $544 million. Now it’s $1 billion.Your scribbler talking to Jeromy Farkas, then a councillor.
He bluntly says Calgarians are being overtaxed, as he speaks of “our little piggy bank nobody talks about anymore.”
