The whopping Conservative win in Durham has demonstrated that Canadians want change in government, and are willing to back it up their voting decisions, say some veteran political players. Meanwhile, one former top political strategist to the prime minister says one byelection result is not enough to jump to the conclusion that time’s up for the Liberals. By October 2025, the scheduled election date, the political landscape could be totally different from what it is now.

“The problem is that nothing seems to be moving the needle . You would have thought that the pharmacare announcement last week, which was probably timed nicely to coincide with this byelection, would have had some effect, and the answer is: none,” said Darrell Bricker, CEO of Ipsos Public Affairs. “The only thing that keeps changing on all of this stuff is the number of days they have left . The actual numbers themselves don't change.
