The Conservative leader told his team that it’s incumbent upon them to know exactly who they are meeting with when they are out in public.
OTTAWA — He didn’t quite read them the riot act, but Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre did chastise his MPs Wednesday over the fact that three of them met with a controversial German lawmaker.
But Poilievre stopped short of meting out any punishment to the MPs, instead issuing what some viewed as a warning — that while mistakes can and will get made, the Conservatives cannot afford to make very many. Earlier this week, however, Poilievre ducked repeated questions from reporters asking him to restate — in his own voice — his statement.
In response to repeated questions about how much Trudeau knew about allegations of foreign interference in Canadian elections, Trudeau tried to turn the tables by demanding that Poilievre apologize for the controversial lunch. That even includes how the party has chosen, in recent weeks, to take on allegations of meddling by China in Canadian elections.
The trio of MPs met with Anderson — who drew attention for a speech before the European Parliament last year in which she called Trudeau a disgrace to democracy — during her Canadian tour last month. Anderson supported the protest movement that opposed Canada’s COVID-19 vaccination mandates, and trashed Trudeau for his use of the Emergencies Act to end it.
