Second annual cross country skiing, biking and running event at Hiawatha Highlands and area aims to keep people healthy, raise funds for more local trail development

Approximately 250 cross country skiers, fat bikers and runners took part in a healthy trek in the second annual Beaver Freezer event held at the Sault’s Hiawatha Highlands and other regional locations on Saturday.

Participants had their choice of taking part in a full 42 kilometre marathon or a 22 kilometre half marathon, a 12 to 14 kilometre mini-marathon starting at Trout Lake and finishing at Hiawatha and a five kilometre short course beginning and ending at Hiawatha. “We have some pretty serious racers out there that are on the World Cup circuit. Some of our fat bikers are past World Cup riders so there are some pretty serious contenders but there are families out there just enjoying a nice day on the trail on a well-marked trail on ice that they know is safe and going through some beautiful areas in Sault Ste. Marie,” Foster said.

“We have a lot of capacity here for trails but we have more that we want to build. The problem is we have to bring people from out of town to build these trails and it costs twice as much, so let’s train some people to build trails, give them the equipment they need and let’s build our own trails in our own community professionally,” Foster said.
