Classical highlights: Salonen launches ‘Premetheus’ projectWhen the orchestra announced its 2021-22 season, one of the most intriguing items on the calendar was music director Esa-Pekka Salonen’s “Prometheus” project. This week, Salonen’s back in Davies Symphony Hall to conduct three weeks of concerts, beginning with Beethoven’s “The Creatures of Prometheus.
Next week finds Salonen conducting Lizst’s Piano Concerto No. 2, with Jean-Yves Thibaudet as soloist. The program also includes the world premiere of Fang Man’s “Song of the Flaming Phoenix” and Scriabin’s “The Poem of Ecstasy.” The conductor wraps up the three-week series with Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” and Violin Concerto, featuring the always-thrilling Leila Josefowicz as soloist; Elizabeth Ogonek’s “Sleep and Unremembrance” completes the program.Program 1, 7:30 p.m. Feb.
