“You're not going to see any local oysters on any menus anywhere,” a Hog Island co-founder said.
If you’ve noticed local oysters missing from Bay Area restaurant menus recently, you can blame the rain., it’s been less than beneficial for Tomales Bay oyster farms. That’s because during periods of significant rainfall, oyster farms have to stop harvesting, as required by the California Department of Public Health.
Hog Island Oyster Co.'s oyster farm in Tomales Bay has been closed for weeks due to the parade of Bay Area storms.“Where it can really affect us is when we get overlapping closures, like weeks upon weeks of rain, and then it just turns into a much longer closure period,” said Shannon Gregory, owner of Point Reyes seafood restaurant theBoth Tomales Bay Oyster Co. and Hog Island Oyster Co.
“Luckily for us, because we buy a lot of oysters from friends of ours to have a variety on the menu, we can still stay open,” Finger said. “We can still get good oysters for people. But we've got to pay for those, so it hits us in the bottom line a bit.”
