A Bay Area school board meeting devolved into shouting, moral panic and personal attacks thanks to a conversation about books with LGBTQ themes.

About 30 members of the community spoke about the policy at the Tuesday meeting, with about half arguing for the books to be removed. Some of the most incendiary commentary of the night came from a woman named Helen, who asked the board to refer to her as"Taiwan's a country" because, she explained,"There are a lot of Asian Helens and I have gotten steak-knifed outside my garage before. I really don't want other Helens to have my fate.

The teacher that"Taiwan's a country" is referring to is presumably California High School math teacher Bob Allen, who is gay and, because he’s been publicly supportive of keeping the books, has been the target of baseless homophobic attacks from some residents.

Ultimately,"Taiwan's a country" had her mic cut off after an extended riff about how"sex is like this purse that I have" and an exclamation that Bill Clinton"had oral sex in the White House." The latter prompted board President Rachel Hurd to say,"You are way off topic," and someone then pulled the plug on the resident’s remarks.

The spat with Allen wasn't the only time the meeting grew personal. Jones, one of the residents who supported removing the books, said his son graduated Monte Vista High School years ago."This nation is going to lose its soul if you don't protect children," he said. He then concluded his remarks by telling district Superintendent John Malloy,"Mr. Malloy, you need to take a look at your own soul." Malloy immediately asked Jones to be civil.

Overall, aggrieved residents made a series of hyperbolic remarks to try to justify the books’ removal. Resident Mike Arata claimed that a well-known journal read by school librarians is"an echo chamber for twisted librarians drawn themselves to porn like flies to dog poop.
