Here are some of the most memorable recording ushered by Bay Area jazz and roots artists in 2022
The Alaya Project’s self-titled 2022 debut is a sizzling blend of South Indian music, jazz and funk.With the full-scale return of live music this year, musicians once again have access to a relatively dependable source of income. But the conundrum of recording is more confounding than ever.
The easing of supply chain disruptions fueled the unlikely, ongoing resurgence of vinyl, with sales increasing by about 22 percent over the first half of the year, according to the Recording Industry Association of America.
Streaming services offer artists little except the possibility of widespread exposure, but as the old, bitter musician joke goes, you can die from exposure. Some Bay Area outfits have found a workable détente that fits extreme productivity. The Jazz Mafia collective released an EP nearly every month throughout the year on its Bandcamp page, providing fans with a kaleidoscopic array of consistently compelling music . Bandcamp, which is based in Oakland, continues to play an outsized role in facilitating musicians making money via digital distribution .
All that is to say, hats off to the artists who released albums this year, who took the leap of faith to invest their time, money, creativity and spirit in an endeavor with little chance of remunerative return. Listed in alphabetical order, these are the albums that caught and held on to my ear most tightly this year.
