They said she would sink if she ever hit open water again. They said she was a rust-bucket. She proved them all wrong.

The Battleship Texas towed into the Houston Ship Channel Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2022 in La Porte. The ship is making the journey to a dry dock in Galveston for a complete overhaul of the 108 dreadnought, that served in both world wars.“It feels like Christmas Day for me,” said Paulie Gaido of Galveston, who was among the Friends of the Texas group who sweated and helped draw support for the move.

Early into the trip, viewers snaked their way between the petrochemical plants and container terminals north of Morgan's Point for a glimpse of the big girl in open water. Some stopped along the Fred Hartman Bridge -- carrying Texas 146 over the ship channel -- despite police presence, with officers joining in the impromptu watch party."C'mon beautiful," Bonnie Stokes said as she waited for the ship to round into view.

Hundreds crowded the Texas City Dike for a chance at seeing the ship in the open waters of Galveston Bay, making the popular fishing spot look more like Galveston's Stewart Beach on a Memorial Day weekend. Cars and trucks lined the single road along the dike. “It’s just awesome,” said Valarie Holly, who was on the ship the last day it was open to the public. “My dad was on a destroyer when he was in the Navy so it makes me think of him.”"It's historic," Remmy said."Schools aren't going to tell about it, so you need to come out and see it.""It needed work," he said. The Battleship Texas is making its daunting journey to Galveston. Here's how to watch it.

Gaido said preserving the Texas is necessary to remind people of the need to prepare for dangers in the world.
