Baseball great Alex Rodriguez — aka A-Rod — has an unlikely message for his fans and everyone else: He wants you to take better care of your gums.
Rodriguez said he was surprised to find out during a recent visit to his dentist that he had early-stage gum disease, which led to his taking on the OraPharma ambassador role. OraPharma is behind Arestin, an antibiotic often used in combination with dental procedures to treat the condition, which is also known as periodontitis.
Gum disease is “mainly the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth,” the CDC explains. In its most serious stage, “the gums can pull away from the tooth, bone can be lost, and the teeth may loosen or even fall out.” Hewlett said there’s another concern, as well, because of the association between gum disease and heart disease and diabetes.
