The news that Clark won't represent the United States on the Olympic team isn't sitting well with some big voices.

FILE - Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark reacts after scoring against the Seattle Storm during the first half of a WNBA basketball game Thursday, May 30, 2024, in Indianapolis. So when news broke on Saturday morning that the Indiana Fever rookie star was not selected to the United States 2024 Olympic basketball team, voices across the sports world reactions ranged from shock to anger to pragmatism.

One of the loudest of those was Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, who posted a video livid at the decision to leave Clark off the 12-woman squad.from the Belmont Stakes. “I don’t know who’s making the decision, women’s Olympic committee, whatever it is. I don’t care if you think Caitlin Clark, talent-wise, belongs on this team, even though she does put up 30, 7-of-13 , most points in the history of the league for a rookie, none of it matters.

“These women, and I love women. I’m a pro-woman guy. They complain, and they cry about equal rights, equal wages, blah blah blah blah. Hey dummies, for the first time in the history of basketball, you arguably have a player who is the most popular player in the world. You could argue Caitlin Clark is the most talked-about, discussed, most popular... basketball player in the world...

Clark is coming off perhaps her best game as a pro, tying a career-high with 30 points and nailing seven 3-pointers in leading the Fever to a win over the Washington Mystics in the highest-attended WNBA game since 2007. The rookie is averaging 16.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game, earning WNBA Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for the month of May.However, others, like longtime basketball writer David Aldridge, see the rationale, as the 12-woman team assembled is a stacked roster of more veteran players than the 22-year-old Clark.. Yes, he was. Having one college player on the team was a condition for NBA player inclusion. And lots of people crushed that decision at the time.
