BarbarianWriter-director Zach Cregger’s opening gambit is strong: a young woman, Tess , arrives in a run-down Detroit rental to find it’s been double-booked, with an occupant already inside .
They spend an awkward evening together with little incident, but when a secret basement door leads to a positively labyrinthine underground lair for someone – or something – vile, the film pulls the rug out from under you just as the horror stakes begin to amp up. Tess creeps down a pitch-black tunnel, voice barely rising above a frightened croak, to discover a filthy mattress in a hidden room. When the violence begins, the screen cuts to black.
Just as the first scares set in, the setting – and characters – change completely, picking up a thread of the story that eventually sees an oily, detestable Hollywood type arrive at his Detroit home and unwittingly join the head-ripping fun.This happens a third time to weaker effect, hurtling back to another segment telling us the history of this awful house, and attempting to link the horror story to misogynistic abuse.
