Nico Hülkenberg returns to the F1 grid after a lengthy period away. The German last competed full-time in 2019 with Renault, but he still stayed part of the F1 community. He stepped in for Sergio Pérez at Racing Point in 2020 for two races when the Mexican driver tested positive for COVID-19, and Hülkenberg returned to the cockpit one more time that season for the same team but for Lance Stroll.

Come 2021, Hülkenberg joined Aston Martin as a reserve driver; however, he didn’t return to the grid until the 2022 season when Sebastian Vettel tested positive for COVID-19. Hülkenberg recorded a P17 and P12 finish in Bahrain and Jeddah, respectively. Though he’s been away from a full-time seat for a few years, Hülkenberg said Thursday, “I just feel refreshed, reset, very positive and in a good state of mind. Ready to go again. Obviously I’ve done a couple of seasons so I know what’s coming. I know what to expect.”

The German went 14th in Friday’s first practice, fifth during second practice and 15th during Saturday’s final session. Hülkenberg joked Friday evening that “I wish I had taken a few tenths out to be honest and kept them in my pocket. It’s one lap pace… it’s fine, and it’s fun, it’s nice. But… on Sunday, that’s obviously where the goal is, and where it matters, and I feel that’s where we have a lot of work to do, and some homework.
