High aluminum is threatening our food security.
Fortunately, U.S. senators are working to repeal Section 232. They have a bill, the Bicameral Congressional Trade Authority Act, that would eliminate these burdensome tariffs and reduce the cost of aluminum. This approach is widely popular and is gaining traction through a sister bill in the lower chamber. Consumer advocacy groups and industry associations have both endorsed the legislation. This type of direct policy that delivers solutions is what we need now.
As chairman of the House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, I recognize that the Bicameral Congressional Trade Authority Act is the type of legislation Pennsylvania needs. Reducing aluminum costs helps our important agriculture and manufacturing industries—supporting job growth and reducing prices for consumers. We need Capitol Hill to recognize this too.
High prices demand a quick solution, and with canning season upon us, we need our lawmakers to act now. Section 232 has failed to increase domestic production and now inflates aluminum prices for Americans across the country. The bill offers a clear solution, as eliminating these tariffs would cut expenses for businesses and reduce prices for consumers. Smart policy can fix our financial mess. This legislation will help.
