Upgrades to the wastewater plant, which provides service to about 750,000 Metro Vancouver residents, will improve wastewater treatment so there’s less pollution going into the water, said Eby.Article content It will also be built to withstand rising sea levels because of climate change, and support ecological restoration work with the Musqueam Indian Band including to protect fish and bird habitat, he added.

The announcement follows an earlier one Friday from the B.C. government that 188 municipalities will receive a one-time $1-billion boost to address the needs of their growing communities. The grants will be distributed as an initial $500,000 per municipality or district, with adjustments made for population size and per-capita population growth between 2016 and 2021.

All local governments will be required to report on the use of funds in their annual audited financial statements.
