“My son did not get into Simon Fraser Elementary … and none of his friends won the Simon Fraser ‘lottery’ ” wrote a single mother of two young kids. Instead, her son got into Florence Nightingale Elementary many blocks away near Kingsway.
“To not have that come to fruition, it’s really the ultimate slap in the face to voters,” Sturko said. The Vancouver school board and the City of Vancouver in 2021 signed a 99-year lease for land adjacent to Hinge Park on Columbia Street for the new school. The terms of the lease state that construction must begin by next January.
