People look for ways to cool off during the heat dome in 2021With the temperature expected to rise this weekend, the City of Vancouver began installing and activating a dozen misting stations Thursday to help people stay cool. The city has increased the number of misters it sets up since the 2021 heat dome that killed 117 people in Vancouver.
The city has also made efforts to link with community groups to identify people most at-risk in extreme heat. The city has service agreements with 10 neighbourhood groups so that wellness checks can be carried out and people can be transported to cooling centres if needed.Article content There has been some criticism of access to funding to retrofit older buildings. Last year, the Green party had said there should be better access to essential home retrofits, including installation of heat pumps.Article content
Troy Clifford, president of the 4,600-member Ambulance Paramedics and Emergency Dispatchers of B.C., said despite the improvements, to which he gave credit to the province, they’re still seeing delays in the Lower Mainland and other areas of the province.Article content“I think our response capacity is better than it ever was, but I think we still need to deal with the shortage of resources in many communities,” he said.
