B.C. exhibit honours Indigenous and Black lives lost to police violence
Cries of “Shame! Shame!” rang out through a Vancouver gallery Wednesday as the families of Indigenous and Black people killed by police in B.C. and Canada gathered to mark International Day Against Police Brutality.
In B.C. alone, there have been 141 police-involved deaths since 2000, according to data project Tracking Justice. Under the Criminal Code, a police officer in Canada is allowed to use lethal force if the officer believes it is necessary to save their life or protect someone else from death or serious harm. The family of Julian Jones, who was shot and killed by a Tofino RCMP officer in February 2021, speak at a gathering on the International Day Against Police Brutality on March 15, 2022. “If I were to go and shoot and kill somebody today, my name would be plastered across the media.
Lowndes’ mother Laura Holland said Wednesday the police deserve to be shamed for what they did to her son and Indigenous people generally. She and Laura Linklater, described as a kind of second mother to Lowndes, are the creators behind the “Honour Their Names” exhibit at Gallery Gachet.
