The Northeast Ohio REgional Sewer District is testing for E.coli bacteria in the water following the intense storms that began Wednesday evening.

That’s the warning from thewhich posted a public advisory Wednesday night due to intense rain that overwhelmed the combined sewer system, causing sewage as well as stormwater to be discharged into Lake Erie.

The sewer district will monitor the water at 10 locations at the beach twice a day. Half of the monitoring spots are near the beach and the rest are further offshore. Samples taken will test for E.coli bacteria and results will be available 24 hour later. The combined sewer outfall at the beach dates back the late 1880s. The number of overflows at Edgewater has greatly diminished since the 1970s when there were about 40 to 50 such incidents per year, according to the sewer district.

“The Edgewater overflow serves as a last-resort release point during heavy rains, protecting homes and the Westerly Wastewater Treatment Plant from flooding; as a result, we knew it wasn’t practical to remove it,” sewer district CEO Kyle Dreyfuss-Wells stated in a news release. “However, we explored options, including relocating the outfall approximately 2,000 feet into Lake Erie. This option does nothing for water quality, while costing customers more than $30 million to build.
