A small group of people snowshoeing in backcountry near Marble triggered an avalanche on Friday, one person and two dogs died in the slide.
Four people were snowshoeing to a home in the lower portion of Yule Creek on and unmaintained road, according to the“Three of the people and both dogs moved to a road that cut mid-slope along the side of a steep gully” where an avalanche was triggered, CAIC said. The avalanche swept them down into a gully with mountainside debris and deep snow.
“Two people were partially buried, but able to dig themselves out of the snow,” the CAIC said. “The other person and both dogs were completely buried and killed.” West Elk Mountain Rescue, Mountain Rescue Aspen, Carbondale Fire and Rescue District, the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, and the Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office responded and assisted two people in the group out of the field.
The avalanche, which happened at about 8,200-feet elevation, was described as about 50-feet wide and it ran about 250-feet vertically. It released on a west-facing slope below treeline and the crown was about one- to two-feet deep,The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday said that the body of the person who died in the avalanche has been recovered.
