Anthony Albanese was visibly emotional as he revealed the wording of the question he hopes to put to 26 million Australians later this year.
The Australian Prime Minister fought back tears as he revealed the question the government wants to ask in a proposed referendum on constitutionally recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders."For many... this moment has been a very long time in the making," he added, standing alongside several Indigenous leaders.
In the last referendum in 1999, Australians voted against changing the constitution to create a republic and replace the British monarch as head of state with a president. The referendum question to be put to Australians will be: A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?"Australia's constitution should recognise the fact that people have been here for 60,000 years. The oldest continuous civilisation on Earth and that should be a source of pride.
