Nearly 300 spoke at an Austin hearing on the HOME Act, which aims to boost affordable housing but raises density and safety concerns. Two more meetings planned.

Nearly 300 Austin residents, housing advocates, and community members voiced divided opinions at a packed City Council hearing on the proposed HOME Act, an initiative that would amend the city's land development code to allow multiple housing units on single-family lots.

"This is not an end all be all solution, but it is one step closer to becoming an Austin we all want to live in," said one UT student in favor of the act. District 7 Councilwoman Leslie Pool is the author of the Home Act. If passed it will amend the city's land development code to allow three homes one single family lot including RV's, revise two housing unit regulations and eliminate restrictions on how many people can live in a housing unit.Homeowner Susan Spataro worries that the bump in density may cause fire hazard concerns among other issues.

"There have been a lot of questions that have come up on whether or not these would fall under condo requirements or regulations and who's going to own the land," she said.
