An Aurora police officer involved in a fatal crash with his patrol vehicle was charged Thursday with vehicular homicide in the case.
Officer Eduardo Landeros, 26, who was hired in February 2022, resigned on April 25, a day before a scheduled internal affairs interview about the crash, the Aurora Police Department said in a statement Thursday.
Landeros is charged with vehicular homicide — reckless driving and criminally negligent homicide, according to the Arapahoe County District Attorney’s Office. An arrest affidavit in the case says that Landeros was driving over 100 mph just before the crash, and his speed was between 88 mph and 98 mph at the time of impact. The overhead lights were not activated and Landeros, described as a probationary officer, was responding to a non-emergency call — the front door of a vacant residence had been kicked open — at the time.
At about 8:20 p.m. March 4, Landeros was driving north on South Chambers Road when he crashed his vehicle, a marked 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe SUV, into a 2013 Toyota Corolla in the intersection at East Bates Avenue, police said. The Corolla, driven by 44-year-old Elias Anderson, of Aurora, was going about 18 mph at the time of impact, according to the affidavit., and Landeros was trapped inside. Emergency responders with Aurora Fire Rescue took Landeros and Anderson to a hospital, where Anderson died shortly after arrival.
