Like former Auburn head coach Guz Malzahn, Hugh Freeze said Thursday night that he draws a lot of inspiration from the former Florida and South Carolina head ball coach.
Hugh Freeze was sitting at SEC Media Days when he was still at Ole Miss when Steve Spurrier — still the head coach at South Carolina at the time — asked him, “Who’s sitting here, visor guy?”
But Spurrier, best known for his time leading the Florida Gators, didn’t seem too concerned about the Bulldogs’ head coach and replied to Freeze, “not anymore” and plopped down beside him. Former Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn said in a 2014 interview that he too traded a typical ball cap for a visor around the year 2000 after Spurrier popularized the accessory.
“He was the first one that I thought kinda played football at a fast tempo somewhat and kinda threw it around,” Freeze said Thursday night during his segment on Auburn’s “Tiger Talk”. “I was a high school coach then and he and I are still close to this day. He calls me ‘visor guy’.”
