Nature research paper: Au-Pd Separation Enhances Bimetallic Catalysis of Alcohol Oxidation
We are providing an unedited version of this manuscript to give early access to its findings. Before final publication, the manuscript will undergo further editing. Please note there may be errors present which affect the content, and all legal disclaimers apply. In oxidation reactions catalysed by supported metal nanoparticles with oxygen as the terminal oxidant, the rate of the oxygen reduction can be a limiting factor.
This imbalance can be overcome by alloying gold with palladium which gives enhanced activity to both reactions; however, the electrochemical potential of the alloy is a compromise between that of the two metals meaning that although the oxygen reduction is improved in the alloy, the dehydrogenation activity is poorer.
