"At 9:56 a.m., we filed our state law claims against Cameron Brewer alleging that he was grossly negligent, assaulted and battered Danny Ray Thomas, falsely imprisoned him and violated his state constitutional rights," Vince Colella, Crump's co-counsel, said Tuesday at the Harris County Civil Courthouse.

A federal judge granted Thomas' family permission to file the wrongful death claim against Brewer in state court on Aug. 22, despite him being cleared of criminal liability, Crump's office said in a news release. During Brewer's criminal trial, his defense attorneys said the deputy"feared for his life" after encountering Thomas who he believed was high on PCP and didn't respond to a Taser.

Pamela Turner, a Black woman, was shot and killed by a police officer in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Baytown in 2019. Video of this shooting also was captured by a bystander.
