Attenborough's local series sits proudly among his more far-flung adventures Review here, by Ed Power:
As you would expect of a BBC natural history series presented by Sir David Attenborough,brimmed with spectacular imagery. Leaping orcas, twirling eagles, and psychopathic seagulls were among the stars of this gorgeous valentine to the nature of the UK and Ireland.
But in the first of five episodes, the most memorable scene was also one of the more unadorned. It came at the very end, when Sir David leaned on some rocks and gazed at a group of puffins. Sir David, still nimble and twinkling at 96, radiated warmth and curiosity. The puffins huffed about, unaware they were in the presence of an icon, and yet there was an unmistakable moment of connection. On a lonely outcrop off the Pembrokeshire coast, man and bird enjoyed a shared moment., when he vibed with a family of mountain gorillas. Decades on, and Sir David is no longer game for climbing trees in Rwanda, but his defining feature remains an enthusiasm for animals.
While the series is ostensibly about the British Isles , it still felt strange to lump Ireland in with the rest of the UK. Sir David’s continuous referring to Britain and Ireland as “we” and “us” felt odd to me as an Irish person. As the ongoing melodrama over the Northern Ireland Protocol reminds us, things can get tricky when British people take it for granted that Ireland is within their sphere of influence. The BBC should know better.is, in totality, beautiful and charming.
It is also bittersweet. The presenter says this is “likely to be his last” on-location series and will thus bring down the curtain on one of the most spectacular careers in broadcasting. It will be impossible to replace him .
