The Andromeda Galaxy is about 2.5 million light years from our Milky Way Galaxy, but the outer edges of both galaxies are already gravitationally interacting as they head towards a merger that will take place in about four billion years from now. This image of the Andromeda Galaxy was taken by the NASA Galaxy Evolution Explorer orbiting telescope in 2012.
It gets its name from the Latin Via Lactea, from the Greek Kiklios Galaxios, meaning milky circle. The term is said to have originated with the Greek myth surrounding Hera, the Greek queen of the gods. The myth states that the Milky Way stars are the milk that spurted from Hera's breast when she awoke to find that she had, unknowingly, been suckling one of Zeus' illegitimate children , placed there by Zeus whilst she slept.
When we look towards the bright, central area of the galaxy, in the direction of the Sagittarius constellation, we are looking towards the yolk of the egg. It is in this yolk that the black hole Sagittarius A* lies.Sag A* is a supermassive black hole at the galactic center of our Milky Way in the direction of the Sagittarius constellation.
The Andromeda Galaxy lies around 2.5 million light years from the Milky Way Galaxy. This galaxy is slowly moving towards the Milky Way Galaxy, at a speed of 396,000 kilometres per hour, and it is anticipated that the two galaxies will merge with one another in about 4 billion years. The black holes from each galaxy will also, in all likelihood, merge to form a much larger black hole.
