Heavy rains that drenched Appalachia earlier this week brought what Gov. Andy Beshear called one of the most devastating flooding events in Kentucky's history. As of today, the flooding has claimed the lives of at least 25 people, including four children.
Flash flooding in eastern Kentucky has killed at least 25 people and resulted in 18,000 power outages. Gov. Andy Beshear said the state is still conducting search and rescue efforts and won't be able to start rebuilding for days and potentially weeks. Heavy rains that drenched Appalachia earlier this week brought what Gov. Andy Beshear called one of the most devastating flooding events in Kentucky's history.
"We continue to pray for the families that have suffered and unfathomable loss, some having lost almost everyone in their household," he said."... That count is going to continue to go up, and we don't lose this many people in flooding; this is a real tough one." The governor declared a state of emergency for the flooding Thursday and requested federal aid the following day. Beshear's initial request was approved by President Biden on Friday.
