If not for torrential thunderstorms in Minneapolis mandating a Thursday doubleheader, Martinez would have remained in the minor leagues. Houston debated between him and Ronel Blanco for the extra roster spot awarded to teams playing doubleheaders. Blanco had a locker in the Astros’ clubhouse before the day began. The team chose Martinez.
Martinez contributed 1 ⅔ scoreless frames. He had four major league strikeouts when he awoke Thursday morning. Martinez struck out three of the six batters he saw that afternoon. The Twins struck out 13 times against four Astros pitchers, prolonging the sort of pitching clinic rarely conducted at the major league level.
