Astros' Jake Meyers OK, but not in lineup after being hit in head by pitch

Jake Meyers wasn't in the Astros' lineup Tuesday, but he said he was OK after being hit in the head by a pitch the previous night.Astros outfielder Jake Meyers has felt a ball hit his helmet before while batting, but he had never quite experienced what happened Monday night when he was hit by a pitch from Cubs starter Jameson Taillon in the series opener, a 6-4 Astros victory.

Meyers turned his head to try and avoid the breaking ball in the fourth inning, and his helmet scooted forward on his head with the sudden movement, exposing part of the back of his head — exactly where the ball wound up hitting.Meyers has flowing locks out the back of his helmet, which in this case helped slightly cushion the blow. After a brief moment of laying on the dirt at the plate to make sure he was OK, Meyers was able to stay in the game and trotted down to first base.

Meyers said Tuesday that he was fine and Astros manager Dusty Baker said the club took every precaution in making sure Meyers was OK afterward and hadn’t suffered a concussion. Chas McCormick started Tuesday night in center field. “ got checked something like three times by the doctor and checked again ,” Baker said. “He was cleared, and he wasn’t slated to play anyway.”
