Emphasizing an appreciation for the “integrity of the game,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said Wednesday he plans to play all of his regular starters during the team’s final six regular-season games against the Tampa Bay Rays and Philadelphia Phillies.

The Astros' regulars will play the final two series of the regular season, manager Dusty Baker said, citing"the integrity of the game."Emphasizing an appreciation for the “integrity of the game,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said Wednesday he plans to play all of his regular starters during the team’s final six regular-season games against the Tampa Bay Rays and Philadelphia Phillies, even if they carry no meaning for Houston’s postseason positioning.

Both the Rays and Phillies should enter Minute Maid Park still in search of a wild-card berth. Tampa entered Wednesday’s slate of games with a magic number of three. Philadelphia’s is seven as it seeks to end a 10-year playoff drought. “You’ve got to put your best foot forward and give whoever else a chance down the stretch,” Baker said Wednesday. “You’d hate to field your second team a team trying for the playoffs if I was on the other side. I’m trying to do that to make sure you honor the integrity of the game.”

Baker gave Jose Altuve, Yuli Gurriel and Yordan Alvarez the night off during Wednesday’s series finale against the Diamondbacks and acknowledged he “probably won’t schedule an off day” during the final six games of Houston’s season. Alvarez could be the only exception given his bum left ankle. Though Baker focused his rationale on the two opponents, another factor is undoubtedly in play. The Astros will have five days off between their final regular-season game on Oct. 5 and Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Oct. 11. Giving players too much rest could cause an issue before the postseason.
