Astros lose to Mariners as benches clear, tempers boil
HOUSTON, TEXAS - JUNE 06: Chas McCormick #20 of the Houston Astros gestures to fans after hitting a solo home run during the second inning against the Seattle Mariners at Minute Maid Park on June 06, 2022 in Houston, Texas. Three home runs were not enough for the Astros as they dropped Monday’s series opener to the Mariners 7-4 at Minute Maid Park, a game punctuated by a benches-clearing brawl.
Javier gave up five earned runs on six hits, one home run, one walk, one wild pitch, one hit batter and four strikeouts. Reliever Héctor Neris bookended the game in similarly poor fashion when he hit Ty France with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, seemingly a retaliation for the Mariners nearly hitting Tucker earlier in the game.
Houston got three-hit games from Altuve, Tucker and Michael Brantley but wasted two crucial opportunities to take the lead after falling behind 5-4. In the fourth inning, Altuve was thrown out at home attempting to score from first base on Brantley’s double, negating a tying run. With two on and two out in the eighth inning, pinch hitter Jason Castro struck out and left Seattle’s lead intact.
