May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month , or AAPI Heritage Month. It's a way to celebrate and recognize Asian American and Pacific Islander people all across the Susquehanna Valley who are making a difference.'I was born in Laos. I moved to the U.S. in 1987 to visit my grandmother. My family were refugees from Laos after the Vietnam War,' Ole Hongvanthong said.Hongvanthong's move wasn't supposed to be permanent, but he's thankful it ended up that way.
'I was probably the only Laos kid in my school district and there were a few Hmong students,' Hongvanthong said. 'A lot of my seeing other Asians were seeing my own family.'From 2020 to 2023, the population of Asian Americans has stayed relatively small in Pennsylvania. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates about 4% of the state population is Asian, which comes out to about half a million.
