One Pokémon villain actually got what he wanted.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In the many years of the Pokémon anime, Ash has gone up against just about every major villain and villainous team there's ever been, and almost every time, Ash and Pikachu come out on top. There's one exception to that, however, and that was when Ash went up against the evil Team Galactic.
Team Galactic, like in the Diamond and Pearl games, intended to use the Legendary Pokémon Palkia and Dialga to open a portal in space and time, one that would forever seal them off from the old world and allow them to create their own twisted version of utopia. They were led by a man named Cyrus, who created an object called the Red Chain, with which he could control Palkia and Dialga's power to force them to open such a portal.
Pokémon's Cyrus Got Exactly What He Wanted These events come to a head in the episode "The Battle Finale of Legend!", where Cyrus is able to actually use the Red Chain. The power of Palkia and Dialga is used to open a portal, and that's when Cyrus reveals his deception: Team Galactic were merely tools to accomplish his goal, and he never once intended to bring a single other person with him to his new world.
Since Cyrus' goal was different from Team Galactic's, his plan actually worked perfectly. Team Galactic's admins and remaining members were arrested, and the portal was destroyed by Palkia and Dialga, but Cyrus himself seems to have gotten what he wanted. While there's no indication what was on the other side of the portal, or whether it's what Cyrus was expecting, it ultimately didn't matter too much what he discovered there.
Ash and Pikachu, along with their companions and the Lake Guardians, did manage to save Sinnoh here, as the region may have been consumed by a black hole had they not been present, but when it came to stopping the villain's plan, they actually failed. This aligns with the story of the Diamond and Pearl games, where Cyrus similarly is the only one to escape through a portal.
