Nearly two weeks into the Brad Treliving era, speculation rules the day regarding the Maple Leafs. Few concrete answers are emanating from the team’s offices on Bay St. (or from those at the practice facility in Etobicoke), which is probably what we should have expected, at least to start, after Treliving was introduced to the media on June 1.
In Toronto, the belief remains that Treliving continues to form a relationship with Keefe and learn more about Keefe’s coaching philosophies. Whether the result for Keefe is an extension beyond the 2023-34 season or a start to the hockey year without long-term stability, there hasn’t been an indication Keefe won’t return.
Some eyebrows might have been raised when Patrick Roy resigned from his positions as coach and general manager of the Quebec Ramparts on Tuesday, but the Hall of Fame goaltender said he had not received any calls from NHL teams regarding a coaching job. Could that change at some point? It wouldn’t be a surprise. Roy has been here before, winning the Jack Adams Award as NHL coach of the year in 2014 with the Colorado Avalanche during his three-year tenure with the team.
While the leverage will swing firmly in Matthews’ favour on July 1, when a no-move clause goes into effect for the final season of his current contract, that date shouldn’t be seen as a point of no return. Still, if there is no extension agreed upon on Canada Day, getting it done before we get too deep into July would be prudent. As it has been said to us by someone who would know, there’s no “exact science” to getting a contract finalized.
