He played eight professional seasons, positioned himself as one of the sport’s most underrated relief pitchers, and still never understood his true purpose.
Buttrey needed something more holistic. Baseball had beaten him down, and White wanted to pick him back up. Meditation and breathing exercises became common. Emotional awareness workshops were more meaningful than bullpen sessions. To fix the pitcher, first White had to work on the person. His retirement announcement read like a final farewell.”I completely lost the drive to continue doing something that I didn’t love,” he wrote. He thanked the fans, thanked Samantha, and tried to rationalize a choice so many struggled to comprehend.
Behind The Lights taught mental skills and financial literacy and offered social media tips to 95 kids. The nonprofit spread to St. Croix, St. Thomas and Roatán, an island in Honduras. None of the kids ever wanted to leave the field. Their joy jolted a jaded ex-player.
