More than 1 million buildings are spread across the city’s five boroughs. The research team calculated that all those structures add up to about 1.7 trillion tons of concrete, metal and glass — about the mass of 4,700 Empire State buildings — pressing down on the Earth. “It’s inevitable. The ground is going down, and the water’s coming up. At some point, those two levels will meet,” said Parsons, whose job is to forecast hazardous events from earthquakes and tsunamis to incremental shifts of the ground below us.The study merely notes buildings themselves are contributing, albeit incrementally, to the shifting landscape, he said.

New York City outlaws discrimination on the basis of weight, heightNew York City Mayor Eric Adams signed legislation Friday that will ban discrimination based on body size by adding weight and height to the list of protected categories such as race, sex and religion. Adams, a Democrat who published a book about reversing his diabetes through a plant-based diet, said the ordinance 'will help level the playing field for all New Yorkers, create more inclusive workplaces and living environments, and protect against discrimination.' Exemptions under the ordinance, which the city council passed this month, include cases in which an individual’s height or weight could prevent them from performing essential functions of a job.
