The Spurs arrived in Toronto on Tuesday with a nine-game losing streak after falling to the Bulls in the first game of their nine-contest rodeo trip. Instead of coaching Dominique Wilkins, Sean Elliott, Avery Johnson, Vinny Del Negro, Perdue and other experienced players, Popovich is trying to teach the game to a young squad that includes four teenagers. Fortunately, Popovich said, the kids all have what he called “great character,” one of the reasons why they can hang with teams like the Bulls, with their DeMar DeRozans, Zach LaVines, Nikola Vucevics and Andre Drummonds, for three quarters before falling apart in the fourth.
