In response to the news, an FA Spokesperson said: “Referees and match officials play vital roles in our national sport.United are just behind Arsenal “Players, coaches, support staff and club officials have a responsibility to treat them with respect, and action will be taken against anyone involved in English football where there is evidence that they have failed to meet that standard.”

Reacting to the report, talkSPORT host Ally McCoist said: “It really is a concern and it’s really been brought to a head with what we saw at the weekend when Fulham had 90 seconds of absolute madness.“It’s really worth addressing it now, I think everybody from grassroots up has to have a look at themselves with the way officials are being respected.

“I don’t think it’s rocket science when you look at rugby, there’s never been a sport where it’s the complete opposite and really healthy and admirable respect for the officials.
