Howard Fischer PHOENIX — The state House gave preliminary approval Tuesday to cutting the length of time Arizonans who are laid off can collect jobless benefits, with lawmakers saying there are plenty of jobs out there.
Stricter limits would apply during periods of lower unemployment, on a sliding scale down to as few as 12 weeks when the rate drops to 5% or less.The measure already cleared the Senate and now awaits a final House vote before it can be transmitted to Gov. Katie Hobbs.Rep. David Cook, R-Globe, said Tuesday he cannot support the measure.
For example, he said, the unemployment rate is higher on Native American reservations. Aguilar also said Arizonans who are disabled or have limited education also are more likely to be without jobs.
