The results from the survey were not shocking, said Ben Leikin, program manager of mental health, addictions and substance health team at Ottawa Public Health

The report also found 44 per cent of students reporting poor or fair mental health and 42 per cent wanting to talk to someone but not knowing where to find help.

A big contributor to mental health issues in youth during the pandemic was the lack of community engagement services, such as sports and other extra-curricular activities. There have also been improvements to more youth involvement in community programming, according to Leikin. The report indicated poor mental health and well-being, thoughts about attempting suicide, and self-harm behaviours were more prevalent among socioeconomically disadvantaged youth, older students and people identifying as 2SLGBTQQIA+.

In 2022, OPH introduced neighbourhood wellness hubs in Ottawa’s most marginalized communities “in a large part to address these health inequities” said Leikin.
