The original museum was founded in 2006 by Olinka Vištica and Dražen Grubišić, Croatian artists who ended their romantic relationship. Upon divvying up their belongings, the pair could not decide what to do with a windup toy bunny, a keepsake from their shared travels. They started a museum to house mementos from past relationships, whether treasured or painful, and the stories behind them.
A pink wedding dress marks the painful end of an Indianapolis marriage. A powder-blue baby's blanket shares the story of a local woman's miscarriage. An ancient typewriter from Bloomington writes its own tale of an absent father. I've been happily married for five years now. Maybe I had learned a little something about healthy partnerships from past relationships. Maybe seeing these items and reading about other experiences from all corners of the world can teach me a little more.
Another station featured a workshop for couples designed around one of the museum's pieces: A collection of doll furniture. The donor had used the tiny furniture to map out a future shared home that never came to be, and participants were asked to do the same. A discussion on common relationship challenges followed.
