Google and Apple are being investigated by UK authorities over an 'effective duopoly' of mobile browser technology.
Safari and Google Chrome browsers icons are seen displayed on phone screen in this illustrationFollowing on from its Mobile Ecosystem Market Study, the CMA will primarily look at three areas of activity; operating systems, app stores, and web browsers on mobile devices.
The press release highlights the main concerns raised in its study; 97 percent of mobile web browsing in the UK runs through either Google’s or Apple’s web engine, and Apple's restricted distribution of cloud gaming services hampering growth: "Ultimately, these restrictions limit choice and may make it more difficult to bring innovative new apps to the hands of UK consumers. At the same time, Apple and Google have argued that restrictions are needed to protect users. The CMA’s market investigation will consider these concerns and consider whether new rules are needed to drive better outcomes.""Many UK businesses and web developers tell us they feel that they are being held back by restrictions set by Apple and Google.
Investigations started by the CMA such as this may only run for 18 months. At the end of that process, if the concerns are confirmed, the authority can choose to impose remedies on the companies involved and make a recommendation to the government on new regulations if required.
