Nassau Bay has long had close ties to NASA and the nearby Johnson Space Center, but the city takes special pride in recent plantings that give it a living connection to space — saplings descended from seeds that traveled around the moon.
Two loblolly pine saplings at David Braun Park in Nassau Bay are descended from trees grown from seeds that circled the moon during the Apollo 14 lunar mission in 1971.
In the early 1950s, Stuart Roosa took a summer job as a smokejumper with the service, parachuting from planes to quell forest fires by hand. He dropped into at least four fires in California and Oregon. “We found out that there are only about 70 or so Moon Trees still alive today,” she said. “We could not let this beautiful, living legacy of the Apollo program just fade into the history books; so we started the foundation in my father’s honor.”
