So I think there is a way that this can all be worked out.
Asked by a CBS Austin reporter if he could share some of the details in that path forward, Bullock said that that information would be made public when APA and Austin city officials return to the negotiating table, beginning March 13.The Austin Police Oversight Act was approved in May by voters, though it has not been fully implemented, prompting a lawsuit from Equity Action, the group behind the initiative.
"As long as both parties at the table are willing to comply with that ballot measure and ensure that its provisions are protected, then I think there should be no issue with with reaching a deal," Harris said. "With respect to the rest of the contract, you know, the law is the law, or the will of the voters is the law. And so the city, the Police Association, everyone needs to comply with the law.
The decision to return to the negotiating table came less than a day after Travis County District Attorney José Garza, who ran on a campaign of police accountability, won the Democratic nomination for his reelection campaign. Bullock says the timing was unrelated, but that "we've identified a solution and we're ready to come out so we can have conversations about that and ultimately come to an agreement and hopefully, the city will agree with us.
In an interview, CBS Austin asked Garza, who technically works at the county-level and does not have a direct tie to the police negotiations, if he had any specific interests in what went into the contract. Garza only noted "that voters have spoken overwhelmingly about their interest in desire to see increased oversight."
