Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez just gave her very first commencement address...inside the Nintendo Switch game, Animal Crossing.
Animal Crossing graduations are a new phenomenon that have emerged during quarantine with so many real-life graduations cancelled. Not that many people can fit in them at a time, and yet it’s better than nothing, and I’ve seen many of these make their rounds on social media. Though I have not seen one with a “speaker” as high profile as AOC, who says that this is the first commencement address she’s actually given .when she opened up her DMs to 6.
Animal Crossing New Horizons has been a massive quarantine hit like no other, racking up 11.77 million units sold by the end of March. That number has crept up to 13.41 million in six weeks, making it the sixth most popular Switch game overall after barely a month and a half of sales data and Switch shortages everywhere.
Animal Crossing uniting friends and at least on this occasion, politicians, is not unusual in quarantine. Fortnite is currently throwing weekly concerts, the only kind that actually exist these days, and many players are socializing across whatever their game of choice may be, though Animal Crossing’s peaceful setting is more appealing than most.
We’ll see if Animal Crossing becomes a campaign battleground ahead of the 2020 election with real-life campaign rallies still shuttered. You think I’m kidding, but as you can see from where things are going, I’m definitely not. And it might be AOC leading the way on that.
