” became seeking creative expression from diverse perspectives in the college community, a community that had become my home. To me, art was therapeutic, and the combination of creating art with community building was the perfect way to heal my home. I paired with members of the community—the curator of a local art museum, a gallery and a fellow peer Alyssa—to bring to fruition a weeklong art exhibition addressing the socio-political situation in the country.
The opening night was followed by three panel discussions hosted by my friend, Hamsa, who discussed being Muslim in today's America. One specific panel stood out to me,"Constructive Activism," in which leaders across various fields discussed how they were creating change in their own roles to better serve internal members of their community and to educate the non-members. Years later, our discussion on how to be constructive is really what influenced my thoughts below.
Some may think an activist as a person holding up a protest sign, rallying against the perpetrators of hate. The Oxford dictionary defines activism as “the action of using vigorous campaigning to bring about political or social change.” But campaigning is no longer the only route. There are ways you can be an activist in your daily life:: Hamsa’s panel featured Amirah Sackett, a dancer in full clad hijab, choreographer, and teacher who uses dance to dispel misconceptions about Muslim women.
You're educating the leaders of tomorrow, in whose hands lie our future. Fight ignorance through them. And if you don’t have a classroom full of students, teach yourself! Get a subscription to a newspaper online or offline—read from publishers that do not support your political or social ideologies, read from authors who do not look like you or sound like you. Seek out education about groups different from yourself.
These examples only scratch the surface. Your activism is unique to what you stand for.
